There are many interesting terms involved in the world of sports. Hat trick, basket, blitz, and breakaway are all terms heard out on the field or court. One term that can be used in both a sport and has a similar meaning in every day life is the word forfeit. Vacuum trucks can forfeit their parking spaces to other service vehicles, children can forfeit their candy for a friend and parents can forfeit their car for their teen. Forfeit simply means to give up or withdraw from a situation.

In a sport game, forfeiting means to give up or surrender to the other team. Often this is done when there is no possible way for that team to win. If they have lost or have too many injured players, the coach may decide to forfeit the game. If there is no hope or belief that winning is an obtainable goal, then it is best to give up instead of wasting everyone's time. Forfeiting can also come from the feeling of intimidation, if a group does not feel adequate or up to par, they may decide to forfeit a competition or event.

In the real world, the word forfeit has many uses. Some commercial properties in Ontario, are forfeited by business owners if they are unable to make payments on the property. In other words, the businessperson is so overwhelmed by the payments that they must close down their company and give the space over to the bank. This also can happen to homes if individuals have outstanding payments that need to be made. For instance, an individual may have to forfeit their Edmonton mortgage because they are no longer able to make the payments. Perhaps they signed the contract when they were more financially stable, but recent developments have made it challenging to keep the home.

People can forfeit other situations if they do not feel it is safe or the right thing to do. For example, if someone is working for a GTA limo service and is asked to transport more than the legal amount of people, they can forfeit their salary by refusing service. In this case, the word does not suggest defeat as much as the desire to not follow through with something based on your own ideas or morals.

In the Toronto, Ajax and Brampton real estate regions, many sellers must forfeit their decorating and remodeling right to agents. The word forfeit suggests a willingness to compromise due to the circumstance. Most often, people who are trying to sell their house need to sacrifice their personal attachment to the house to ensure they attract the right buyers.

Although the word forfeit originates from an athletic term, it has its' relevance in today's world. To forfeit is to give up, regardless of whether you are justified in your reasoning to forfeit or not, it can have a negative connotation in the world of sports.
