Forfeit simply means to give up or withdraw from a situation.

People can forfeit other situations if they do not feel it is safe or the right thing to do. In this case, the word does not suggest defeat as much as the desire to not follow through with something based on your own ideas or morals.

Although the word forfeit originates from an athletic term, it has its' relevance in today's world. To forfeit is to give up, regardless of whether you are justified in your reasoning to forfeit or not, it can have a negative connotation in the world of sports.
